Breaking News: Anurag Thakur Cleared By Supreme Court To Return To BCCI After Nine-Year Ban

0 February 5, 2026 08:45

On this India Today special report, anchor Suesha Savant discusses a significant legal victory for Anurag Thakur. Nine years after his removal as BCCI president, the Supreme Court has lifted the ban preventing him from holding office or participating in the cricketing body’s affairs. The bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Justice Suryakant, noted that the ‘ban was never intended to be lifelong’ and acknowledged Thakur’s unconditional apology for his past defiance of the Lodha Committee recommendations. Correspondent Anisha Mathur explains that the court considered the streamlined administration under the new BCCI constitution and the duration of the existing cease and desist order. The ruling marks the end of a long-standing legal battle that began in 2017 following the spot-fixing and match-fixing scandals that prompted major reforms in Indian cricket administration. This decision paves the way for Thakur to re-engage with the BCCI after nearly a decade of exclusion from the country’s premier sports body.
