Calls grow for government to manage ‘massive expansion’ of data centres across Australia

Melbourne Lord Mayor Nicholas Reece discusses his call to the government to sustainably manage AI infrastructure as data centres continue to expand.
“Last night the City of Melbourne unanimously passed a motion, calling for quite a number of things … we put in place a proper framework … to properly manage the massive expansion of data centres we are seeing across Australia,” Mr Reece told Sky News Australia.
“At the moment, our estimates are that data centres will consume more than 20 per cent of the power across Greater Melbourne by 2050.”
