Israeli attacks leave at least 20 dead in Gaza

In order to keep Phoenix rush hour traffic moving smoothly on a bridge with a shifted pier, authorities have deployed heavy patrols, tow trucks, and engineers. A single stopped car, whether from an accident or a flat tire, could cause a major traffic jam. Drivers are being told to keep going no matter what, and the Department of Transportation is monitoring the pier and the river level before beginning repair work.
Terminal 3 at Sky Harbor Airport is on track to open on October 31st, despite ongoing construction. Once complete, the new terminal will handle half of the airport’s traffic and is expected to ease congestion with new access points. With passenger traffic growing at twice the national average, officials believe a fourth terminal may be needed soon, especially with airline deregulation on the horizon.
Following a recent DC-10 plane crash in Chicago, many passengers at Sky Harbor Airport are feeling nervous about flying, though most say it won’t stop them from traveling. One pilot explained that while a DC-10 should be able to fly with one engine lost, the violent detachment of an engine o takeoff could damage other parts of the plane and give the crew little time to react. Despite the public’s concern, American Airlines continues its normal flight schedule, with no extra checks on its DC-10s, stating that all possible safety measures are already in place.
Actor Dick Van Dyke, who was at Sky Harbor while on his way to California, says he flies often and thinks about crashes, but it doesn’t make him want to stop flying.
"You never really know when you’re going to go. And anything I want to be doing with my life, I better be doing it now," he said.
Phoenix fire officials are concerned about the lack of sprinkler systems in the city’s high-rise buildings, noting that a fire like the one in a Los Angeles high-rise could easily happen locally. A survey found that many tall buildings, including major banks and City Hall, lack sprinklers, and none of the 12 high-rise apartment buildings in Phoenix have them. This is particularly dangerous as the fire department’s ladders can only reach up to five or six floors, making fires on upper floors a deadly situation.
Crews have closed the southbound lanes of a Phoenix freeway at 19th Avenue to test a new resurfacing method that uses recycled automobile tires. This process, which involves spraying a mix of ground tires and asphalt, is much faster and cheaper than traditional paving, with this 1,500-foot project taking only one day. While it’s more cost-effective, officials note that the experimental surface doesn’t last as long.
During National Smoke Out Day at Arizona State University, many students signed a petition to quit smoking for the day. Participants had their lung capacity and blood pressure tested, with some committing to quit permanently. While some were skeptical, many found inspiration in the support of their friends and the event itself, with one student aiming to quit for good. The American Cancer Society reports that last year, 3.5 million people made it through the day without a cigarette.
A new Fighter Plane Air Museum is set to open at Falcon Field in Mesa, housing a collection of 20 World War-era fighter planes, combat paintings, and autographed photos. The collector, a self-described "Walter Mitty fighter pilot," chose the location for its weather-preserving qualities. The site is a fitting home for the collection, as Falcon Field was once a training ground for Royal Air Force fighter pilots during World War II.
