Senior members of the Coalition’s Shadow Cabinet, including Nationals’ Ross Cadell, Bridget McKenzie, and Susan McDonald, have defied the party’s position and voted against the government’s proposed hate speech laws.
This breach of Shadow Cabinet solidarity has put Opposition Leader Sussan Ley in a difficult position, with calls for her to sack the dissenting ministers.
The vote has exposed divisions within the Coalition and raised questions about Ms Ley’s authority as leader, with some suggesting she went too far in pushing for the controversial laws.
The Prime Minister has amplified the Coalition’s disunity and effectively abandoned further efforts on racial vilification laws.
