In the aftermath of the U.S. military operation in Venezuela and the forcible seizure of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, the Colombian border city of Cúcuta has become a focal point of anxiety and preparation.
Located directly across from Venezuelan territory, Cúcuta has seen heightened government attention as Bogotá declared a state of economic, social and environmental emergency for the region to prepare for potential fallout, including a surge of refugees and increased pressure on local services.
Colombian authorities have set up a Unified Command Post in Cúcuta to coordinate resources and support for both residents and any displaced Venezuelans, while officials consider emergency measures to respond quickly to evolving needs along the frontier.
Although there hasn’t been a surge of migration yet, the situation remains fluid as residents, aid agencies and local officials grapple with uncertainty at one of South America’s most consequential border zones.
