Decoding the Women Factor in Tamil Nadu Elections | Khushbu Sundar, Dr. Kanimozhi, Apsara Reddy

0 February 11, 2026 05:29

A panel discussion on women’s empowerment in Tamil Nadu examines the Dravidian model’s impact on social and political equity. Khushbu Sundar, Dr. Kanimozhi, Apsara Reddy highlight that Tamil Nadu contributes approximately 43% to 44% of India’s female manufacturing workforce, supported by state initiatives like the ‘Vidyal Payanam Dittam’ free bus travel and ‘Magalir Urimai Thogai’ financial aid. Despite these economic gains, the debate addresses a decline in female representation within the Legislative Assembly and skepticism regarding the Women’s Reservation Bill’s implementation due to census and delimitation requirements. Dr. Kanimozhi & Apsara Reddy clash over administrative records, noting a reported doubling of POCSO cases under the current government. The conversation explores the persistence of patriarchal mindsets in politics and the historical contributions of various state administrations toward gender equity. While ideologies differ on issues of dynastic politics and safety, the panel emphasizes the importance of independent thinking and education for the next generation of Tamil women to achieve true empowerment.
