Dr Amit Sen: ‘Digital Addiction’ Changes Brain Circuits Similar To Drug Dependence | India Today

Child First Director and Co-Founder, Dr Amit Sen addresses the critical intersection of mental health, neurodevelopment, and digital consumption at the India Today Education Conclave. Discussing the ‘digital world’s’ impact on young minds, Dr Sen highlights how screen addiction mirrors the neural pathways of drug dependence, affecting the amygdala and dopamine systems. He references the recent tragedy in Ghaziabad where three sisters ended their lives, cautioning against ‘reductionist’ views that blame single factors like gaming while ignoring complex family and social stressors. Dr Sen explains that the brain continues to develop complexity until age 25, making adolescents particularly vulnerable to the ‘dopamine kick’ of digital apps designed by a ‘billion-dollar industry’ to hook users. He advocates for a collaborative approach between schools, parents, and policymakers, emphasizing that banning media is less effective than opening creative physical spaces and involving children in setting realistic digital boundaries. The discussion concludes with a call for ‘humility’ among adults to learn from the digitally-native younger generation.
