Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico accused Elon Musk on Monday of trying to buy the Senate seat for Republican Ken Paxton, telling a rally in El Paso that “Texas is not for sale” eight days before the Nov. 3 election between the candidates.
Federal Election Commission filings show Musk gave $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund in September, and the group sent the same amounts to Texas PAC, which has spent more than $150 million on ads backing Paxton and attacking Talarico, according to AdImpact. Paxton has not commented publicly on Musk’s support. Republicans had outspent Democrats on ads in the race by $326 million to $116 million as of early October, according to AdImpact.
Talarico also attacked Paxton’s finances, claiming that Paxton and his trusts own at least 15 properties worth about $9 million, despite his $153,000 salary as attorney general. Paxton, who has denied wrongdoing in past cases, was acquitted in a 2023 impeachment trial, and a securities fraud case against him was dismissed in 2025 after he completed a pretrial diversion program.
"We are running against the embodiment of this corrupt system," Talarico said. "We are running against the most corrupt politician in Texas. Ken Paxton is everything that’s wrong with our politics."
