A federal officer shot a man in the leg in Minneapolis after an attack with a shovel and a broom handle.
The incident has further stoked fear and fury across the city, coming a week after an immigration agent fatally shot a woman.
By Wednesday night, smoke choked the streets near the latest flashpoint as federal officers in gas masks and helmets fired tear gas into a small crowd, while protesters hurled rocks and launched fireworks.
Scenes like this have become a grim routine in Minneapolis since the 7 January shooting of Renee Good amid a sweeping immigration crackdown. Mayor Jacob Frey calls the situation “not sustainable.”
He says a federal presence roughly five times the size of the city’s 600-strong police force has “invaded” Minneapolis, frightening and enraging residents—some urging officers to “fight ICE agents”—even as local police are still expected to carry out everyday duties to keep people safe.
The Department of Homeland Security says it has made more than 2,000 arrests statewide since early December and vows it will not back down. Tensions are mounting, and a city already on edge is bracing for more confrontations.
