Hurricane Lala hits Hawaii, rain and wind batter Maui

Lala has strengthened into a hurricane as it approaches the Big Island of Hawaii Saturday, the National Hurricane Center said. Heavy wind bands are moving in, with widespread hurricane-force wind gusts expected across the island’s higher elevations and conditions expected to "rapidly deteriorate."
At 8 a.m. Hawaii time, or 2 p.m. ET, the center of Lala was about 90 miles southeast of South Point with maximum sustained winds of 70 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center. Lala is expected to move near or over the southern portion of the Big Island later Saturday.
If it makes landfall as a hurricane, Lala would be the first on record to hit the Big Island and the first hurricane to make landfall in Hawaii in more than three decades.
