On January 3, 2026, US forces conducted a targeted military operation in Venezuela, involving airstrikes on ports and infrastructure, followed by special forces capturing President Nicolas Maduro and his wife.
Maduro, indicted by the US Department of Justice in 2020 on narco-terrorism charges, was apprehended in what the administration framed as a decisive strike against a regime tied to drug cartels.
President Trump declared post-operation that the US would “run” Venezuela, emphasising control over its vast oil reserves, the world’s largest, and signalling an intent to deploy US oil companies to revive production.
