Political leaders in the UK have reacted to controversial comments made by US President Donald Trump, who claimed America "never needed” the support of its NATO allies.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer demands an apology from the US president, describing the remarks as “insulting and frankly appalling”.
NATO’s Article Five, which requires all members to respond to an attack on one of them, has been invoked once in the bloc’s 75 year history.
Following the attack on the World Trade Centre on September 11, 2001, more than 150,000 British military personnel were deployed to Afghanistan.
457 British service personnel were killed while on deployment, with more than 150 Canadians, 90 French troops and 44 Danish soldiers also losing their lives during the war on terror.
The comments have been criticised by representatives of several NATO members, including bipartisan condemnation from political leaders in the UK.
