Voters across Japan and Thailand headed to the polls on Sunday (Feb 8) as leaders of both countries sought fresh mandates amid political uncertainty. Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is expected to regain a majority in the lower house, media projections showed, in what would be a big victory for Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. In Thailand, an outright majority for any single party is seen as unlikely and post-election alliance-building is expected to play a decisive role in shaping the next government. Victor Teo, visiting senior research fellow at the National University of Singapore’s East Asian Institute, and Termsak Chalermpalanupap, visiting senior fellow, at the ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute’s Thailand Studies Programme, discuss election developments in both nations on CNA’s Asia Tonight.
