Japan votes in snap election amid record snowfall and unusually snowy conditions in Tokyo

Polls have opened for Japan’s general election on Sunday (Feb 8), It comes amid record-breaking snow in many parts of the country. Tokyo is also seeing rare snow, and there are concerns this could impact voter turnout. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is hoping the election will see resounding victory for her Liberal Democratic Party alongside coalition partner Innovation Party, or Ishin.
They face a newly forged opposition bloc: the Centrist Reform Alliance, which brings together former long-time LDP partner Komeito and the main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party.
