Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s Liberal Democratic Party is projected to win a landslide victory in the snap election for the Lower House, securing over 300 of the 465 seats up for grabs. However, record-breaking snow in parts of Japan has left at least 30 people dead and over 100 injured, potentially impacting voter turnout and the outcome. The blizzard has caused delays in ballot distribution and lower early voting turnout in affected areas.
Analysts suggest lower turnout could favor the LDP, but the party’s split from coalition partner Komeito adds uncertainty. A clear LDP victory could strengthen Takaichi’s policies, including a stronger defense stance and fiscal spending, while signaling domestic support amid tensions with China.
