As Iran accuses the United States of fueling violent protests and writes to the UN Security Council, India Today’s Foreign Affairs Editor Geeta Mohan provides a detailed analysis of the escalating crisis. Mohan states that the current unrest is fundamentally different from previous movements, explaining, ‘this time around, it’s not just about rights, it’s about basic necessities, the fact that the economic collapse is so huge and so severe that basic necessities is something that a common man in Iran is right now fighting for.’ She highlights that while America is openly considering regime change, the Iranian government has shown some restraint to avoid international criticism. Mohan also touches upon the complex geopolitical landscape, questioning whether the interests of global powers like Russia and China will lead them to intervene in the crisis.
