A single-engine light plane crashed shortly after takeoff on the Gold Coast, killing both occupants including a 73-year-old pilot from Beenleigh and a passenger believed to be from Sydney.

The crash sparked scrub and cane field fires, with emergency services conducting a complex multi-agency response across difficult terrain including farmland, creek areas and muddy conditions.
