A divided Federal Reserve stayed on the sidelines and left its key interest rate unchanged on July 29, despite President Donald Trump’s calls for a cut and some predictions that policymakers would have responded to elevated inflation with a hike.
The federal funds rate, a benchmark for interest rates across the country, remains at a range of 3.5% to 3.75%, as it has so far this year. Tasked with delivering maximum employment and stable prices, Fed policymakers received mixed signals from economic data ahead of their July meeting. After three months of surging prices and solid job growth, inflation and hiring slowed in June.
