Ministry of Home Affairs Cracks Down on Wingo App As Government Blocks Over Cyber Fraud

On this India Today report, Jitendra Bahadur provides details on a significant crackdown by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) against the Wingo app. Jitendra Bahadur notes that ‘the server of the command and control center of the Wingo app was blocked’ after it was discovered that the application was being used to orchestrate large-scale cyber scams. The app reportedly sent fake SMS messages from users’ phones without their knowledge to facilitate fraudulent UPI transfers. The government action included geo-blocking command servers, removing over 53 YouTube videos, and blocking four Telegram channels with over 1.53 lakh users. Jitendra Bahadur explains that the fraudsters targeted individuals even if they did not have the app installed by using the compromised devices of existing users. Authorities have advised citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the I4C helpline at 1930 as the investigation into the cyber fraud network continues.
