On this episode of UNKNOWN, Trenton Hooker and Brian Webb talk with Dr. Jürgen Matthäus, former Head of Research at the National Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., who explains how artificial intelligence and a war diary helped unmask the SS death squad killer in the notorious "Last Jew in Vinnitsa" photograph.
Dr. Matthäus details the investigation that used facial recognition and collaboration with online sleuths on Bellingcat to identify the killer as Jakobus Onnen while describing the search through archival records and Soviet passports to name the Jewish victim seen in the image.
They also discuss how modern science is declassifying the secrets of the Nazi Einsatzgruppen operations and recovering identities from their victims in the campaign of genocide during the early years of World War II.
