US officials say the operation to depose Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro – dubbed "Operation Absolute Resolve" – was the result of months of secret planning. Intelligence officials began tracking Mr Maduro since August, finding out what he ate, what he wore and where he went to. At the same time, US special operations forces rehearsed how to extract the president inside a replica of his fortified compound.
