Thousands of Sydneysiders flocked to beaches across the city to escape extreme heatwave conditions with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees. The packed coastline comes as emergency services warned of life-threatening heat and extreme fire danger across NSW. With 22,000 surf lifesavers on duty and 10 drownings already recorded since December, authorities are urging beachgoers to swim between the flags at patrolled locations.
