PLA drills around Taiwan: What’s the message?

Multiple forces of the Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army started drills code-named "Justice Mission 2025" around Taiwan Island on Monday. The move comes after Washington approved the largest-ever U.S. arms sales to the Taiwan authorities. In response, China has taken countermeasures against 20 U.S. companies and 10 senior executives involved in the sales. What risks does this escalation pose to peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait? What message is Washington sending? How could China’s response affect ties with the U.S.?
