Rajdeep Sardesai: BJP Dethrones Thackerays In Mumbai As Devendra Fadnavis Leads Saffron Surge

0 January 16, 2026 14:25

In this Special Report, Rajdeep Sardesai analyzes the 2026 Maharashtra local body election results, marking a significant shift in the state’s political landscape. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a historic victory, ending the Thackeray family’s 30-year control over the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The Mahayuti alliance dominated 25 of 29 municipal elections, causing setbacks for the Thackeray and Pawar factions in their traditional bastions. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emerges as a dominant leader following these results. Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar attributes the win to infrastructure projects like the Atal Setu and Coastal Road, framing the outcome as a mandate for development and progress. The report features interviews with Milind Deora, Murlidhar Mohal, and Avinash Adik, exploring the fragmentation of the opposition and the rise of the ‘Hindutva plus Vikas’ formula. Analysis also covers the decline of the Congress party and the role of the AIMIM. Experts discuss the evolving dynamics within the NCP and the BJP’s establishment as the primary political force in Maharashtra.
