Health authorities across Asia are tightening safeguards, after a Nipah virus outbreak in India’s West Bengal. In Singapore, temperature screening will be set up at Changi Airport for flights arriving from affected areas. Health advisories will also be issued at all points of entry. Nipah is a zoonotic virus, which means it can spread from animals to humans. Fruit bats are the natural hosts for the virus. It can also be transmitted through contaminated food or directly from person to person. Those infected with the Nipah virus tend to display symptoms such as fever, drowsiness, confusion, dizziness and seizures. Nipah is deadly, with an estimated fatality rate of between 40% and 75%.
