Some Malaysia exporters say US tariffs have provided cushion against rallying ringgit

The Malaysian ringgit has recently rallied to its strongest level against the US dollar since 2018. Some exporters have expressed concern because a higher currency hurts their international competitiveness. However, Malaysia’s furniture-makers, who are among the biggest exporters in the world, say US tariffs have provided some protection. One exporter said tariffs imposed by the Trump administration have given Malaysian exports an edge over Chinese products, which face much higher tariffs of at least 25%.
