visibility comment0 event January 6, 2026 timer 07:34
Sir Keir Starmer demanded Cabinet discipline and a laser focus on the cost of living at his first top‑team meeting of the year, a potentially decisive phase for his premiership.
He told senior ministers their 2026 test is to show “hard work, focus and determination” to ease pressure on household budgets across Britain.
The timing is grim: fresh YouGov numbers put Labour third for the first time since the election, on 17%. The Tories sit on 19%, with Reform still out in front on 26%.
It’s the second time Labour’s rating has slipped to 17% since Starmer became PM.
