Survivors describe China-Nepal flash flood as 570+ dead, 1900+ missing

In their latest update, the country’s national disaster agency said that 579 people had died, with 1,924 people missing, including 517 foreign nationals.

Nepal and China have restarted rescue operations in areas devastated by flash flooding, after a pause sparked by fears a barrier lake could unleash another deluge. China’s first professional rescue team finally reached Gyirong port, the area most affected by catastrophic landslides — which have been described as “liquid concrete.”

An Indian-American couple who survived the flood have recounted how they narrowly managed to escape to higher ground and were eventually airlifted to safety by the Nepali army.
