Suspect turns herself in after shooting toddler in south Phoenix, police say

A woman is in custody for allegedly shooting a 4-year-old boy in the face in south Phoenix. Police confirmed that 29-year-old Joanna Chalup Cortez turned herself Wednesday. Police said they are not searching for additional suspects. Cortez is facing multiple charges, including aggravated assault and discharging a firearm at a residence, police said.
The boy, whose family identified as 4-year-old Qahsiem Sinclair, was rushed to the hospital and had emergency surgery. Family members told Arizona’s Family he is expected to be OK.
