Sussan Ley criticises new hate speech legislation for not mentioning ‘radical Islam’

Opposition Leader Sussan Ley criticises the new antisemitism and hate speech bill for not addressing the issue.
“The Opposition has extremely serious concerns about the government’s legislation,” Ms Ley said.
“The legislation does not address the real issues that gave rise to the Bondi attack.
“It doesn’t address Islamic extremism, it doesn’t address ISIS influence, it doesn’t address the rise of antisemitism and the associated terrorist threat in Australia.
“The legislation protects hate preachers by making exceptions for things written in religious texts, but fails to define what those religious texts may be.
“It risks criminalising speech that has nothing to do with antisemitism or radical Islamism.
“It sets up a gun buyback scheme that we don’t even know if the states will support.
“The term radical Islam is not mentioned once; if the prime minister cannot name the problem, he cannot tackle it.”
