PULLING out her phone on board the Polar Prince ship on a brisk June morning, Christine Dawood took a photo of her beloved husband and son beaming as they prepared to board the Titan submersible.

It was supposed to mark the start of a once-in-a-lifetime trip to see the Titanic wreckage – but ended up being the final memory of an unimaginable disaster as the 22ft sub lost contact with its support ship just 90 minutes into the eight-hour voyage in the North Atlantic Ocean.

What followed were four days of anguish, capturing the attention of millions worldwide. Had the sub become stuck in the wreckage? Was it lost thousands of feet beneath the waves with just 96 hours’ worth of oxygen left? Could the sound of tapping picked up on a radar be the crew sending messages through the deep, dark waters?
