President Trump has warned Republicans who broke with him to oppose his Canada tariff policy will “seriously suffer the consequences” at the ballot box.
The fiery threat came after six House Republicans joined Democrats in narrowly passing a resolution to reverse Trump’s tariffs on Canadian imports.
This marks a rare bipartisan rebuke of Donald Trump’s trade agenda.
Trump took to Truth Social to declare that any GOP lawmaker who votes against tariffs will face political fallout.
“Any Republican, in the House or the Senate, that votes against TARIFFS will seriously suffer the consequences come Election time, and that includes Primaries!” Trump wrote.
“TARIFFS have given us Economic and National Security, and no Republican should be responsible for destroying this privilege.”
The tariffs have drawn pushback from lawmakers who say they raise costs for consumers and strain relations with a key US ally.
The measure now heads to the Senate and faces an expected Trump veto.
