The much-vaunted special relationship has come under fresh scrutiny under President Donald Trump, amid rows over free speech, tariff threats linked to Greenland, the Chagos Islands deal, and provocative remarks about NATO’s role in Afghanistan. Yet for all the turbulence, the transatlantic bond remains dense and durable.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Keir Starmer is in Beijing on a three-day mission to “create opportunities” that “benefit” the UK — a high-stakes visit that has sparked talk of a reset with China as he becomes the first British prime minister to set foot there since 2018. The timing, set against heightened tensions with the US, raises sharp questions about Britain’s leverage and long-term strategy.

According to Wyn Rees of the University of Nottingham, the UK’s ties with the United States — especially in intelligence sharing and nuclear cooperation — remain “substantive, long-standing and very, very deep,” the bedrock of Britain’s security.
