UNC3886 targeted all 4 major telcos in Singapore in cyberattack, says Josephine Teo

Singapore’s investigations show that cyber threat group UNC3886 conducted a "deliberate, targeted and well-planned campaign" against the country’s telecommunications sector, announced Minister for Digital Development and Information Josephine Teo on Monday (Feb 9).

"All four of our major telcos Singtel, StarHub, M1 and Simba have been targets of attacks," she said, adding that UNC3886 used advanced techniques to cover their tracks to try and evade detection.

There is no evidence so far to suggest that the attackers were able to access or steal sensitive customer data, she said. But she added: "The knock-on effects of their campaign could also have included other essential services like banking and finance, transport and medical services. The fact that they could perhaps find a way to create so much damage without detection makes it a really worrying concern."

UNC3886 has been described by a Google-owned cybersecurity firm as a "China-nexus espionage group".
