Taiwan and the US have signed a tariff deal that will see the island and its chip companies invest around $740 billion in the United States.
In return, Taipei will get tariffs on Taiwanese goods cut to 15%, the same rate as the EU, South Korea, and Japan.
The deal is significant for Taiwan’s semiconductor industry, which produces 90% of the world’s most advanced chips.
The deal aims to keep the US president, who wants Taiwan and TSMC to make more chips on US shores, on board as a key ally against Beijing’s claims over Taiwan.
