United States Supreme Court justices on Wednesday (Jan 21) signalled scepticism over President Donald Trump’s attempt to remove Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook, whom he has accused of mortgage fraud – allegations she has denied. Lower courts had blocked her removal. During two hours of oral arguments on Wednesday, a majority of the justices questioned whether the president had shown sufficient cause to remove Cook or afforded her adequate due process. Speaking to CNA’s Asia First, University of Virginia law professor Saikrishna Prakash said the justices’ questions point to deep unease about undermining the Fed’s independence. Prakash added that while the Supreme Court is likely to rule against Trump, it may do so in a way that preserves the agency’s autonomy while still allowing the president greater control over other independent agencies such as the National Labor Relations Board and the Securities and Exchange Commission.
