Over 30 people have been killed and hundreds more injured, with the toll expected to rise after Venezuela’s most powerful earthquake in more than a century. The 7.5 magnitude quake struck the country’s northern coast just 40 seconds after a 7.2 magnitude foreshock.
The quakes collapsed homes in the capital, Caracas, and caused widespread destruction in the region. Acting Venezuelan President Delcy Rodríguez has declared a state of emergency, and hundreds of first responders are rushing to find and rescue those trapped in the rubble.
CNN contributor Stefano Pozzebon reports from Bogota, Colombia, and CNN’s Elex Michaelson speaks with USGS research geophysicist William Yeck and Caracas-based journalist Tony Frangie Mawad about the devastating earthquakes.
