Civil Defense of the State of Rio Grande do Sul accounts for around 1.9 million people affected in 437 cities. At least 116 people lost their lives and another 143 are missing as a result of the heavy rains that hit Rio Grande do Sul since April 26th, with greater intensity from April 29th.
Since Thursday (09), the Civil Defense of Rio Grande do Sul has been publishing the names of people who died, as well as those whose whereabouts are unknown. The list is already six pages long. And it doesn’t stop growing. The list, however, is not complete, it is constantly being updated based on the information it receives from municipal civil defenses and the Civil Police.
On Friday (10), the state Civil Defense counted around 1.9 million people affected, in 437 cities, by adverse effects of rain, such as floods, flooding, flash floods, landslides, landslides and others.
Across the state, at least 337,346 homeless people had to, at some point, seek shelter in the homes of family or friends. Another 70,772 people were left homeless, that is, with nowhere to go, they had to take refuge in public shelters or welfare institutions.
Faced with the scale of the damage, governor Eduardo Leite recognized that not only Rio Grande do Sul, but all of Brazil, will have to adjust to a new context, in which extreme weather events have become increasingly frequent, according to experts , as a consequence of climate change and global warming.
